Does Sushi Have Parasites?
Welcome to DoesSushiHaveParasites.blogspot.com!
If you've ever wondered whether sushi can contain parasites, the short answer is yes—traditional sushi made with raw fish can carry parasitic worms. This is one of the reasons many physicians who promote whole-food, plant-based nutrition encourage people to choose vegan sushi instead.
Can Raw Fish Contain Parasites?
Raw and undercooked fish may contain parasites such as Anisakis (herring worms) and fish tapeworms. If consumed, these parasites can cause nausea, vomiting, severe abdominal pain, diarrhea, allergic reactions, and in some cases require hospitalization.
The risk has become an increasing concern. A review published in Global Change Biology found that Anisakis and Pseudoterranova parasites in marine animals commonly used for sushi increased 283-fold between 1962 and 2015.
The Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine (PCRM) summarized this research in an article titled "Fish in Sushi Contain 283 Times More Parasites Than Decades Ago."
What Do Plant-Based Doctors Recommend?
Dr. Neal Barnard and PCRM encourage eating a whole-food, plant-based diet to reduce exposure not only to fish-borne parasites but also to contaminants such as mercury and PCBs.
Dr. Michael Greger has also discussed the health concerns associated with consuming raw seafood and recommends obtaining nutrition from healthy plant foods instead.
Is Vegan Sushi Safe From Fish Parasites?
Yes. Vegan sushi contains no fish, so it cannot contain fish parasites such as Anisakis or fish tapeworms.
Popular vegan sushi ingredients include:
- Avocado
- Cucumber
- Sweet potato
- Carrots
- Pickled radish
- Tofu
- Tempeh
- Nori (seaweed)
- Sushi rice
These ingredients provide the sushi experience without the parasite risks associated with raw fish.
Fish Consumption and Other Health Concerns
Beyond parasites, fish consumption has also been linked in some research to increased risks of certain diseases, including skin cancer in people with higher fish intake. This adds to the reasons many people choose plant-based alternatives.
